Performance & Audits

Speed is not a luxury — it is a ranking factor.

A fast, technically sound website ranks higher, converts better, and reflects well on your business. Here is what that actually involves.

Most small business websites have performance problems their owners don't know about. An image that's 4MB instead of 80KB. Render-blocking scripts that delay the page by two seconds. A redirect chain that adds three round trips before any content loads. None of these are visible to a casual visitor — but Google sees all of them, and so does a user on a mobile connection who gives up and hits back.

I use professional tools to measure and audit every aspect of a site's performance: Google Lighthouse, WebPageTest, Screaming Frog, and Chrome DevTools. The output isn't a vague score — it's a specific, prioritised list of what's wrong and what fixing it will achieve.

What a website audit actually covers

A full audit goes beyond page speed. It covers the complete technical health of your site: crawlability (can Google reach every page?), indexation (are the right pages indexed?), duplicate content (is Google confused about which page to rank?), broken internal and external links, schema markup, canonical tags, redirect logic, and mobile usability. Most sites have several issues in at least one of these areas — even recently built ones.

Performance for new builds

Every site I build targets a PageSpeed score of 90+ and passes Core Web Vitals from day one. This isn't a retrospective optimisation — it's baked into the approach from the start. Hand-coded output, optimised asset delivery, and properly configured caching mean you're never starting from a low baseline.

If you'd like to know how your current site scores, get in touch — I'll run a free audit and give you a plain-English summary of what's affecting your performance.

My site already ranks well — do I still need this service?

If your site ranks but is slow or fails Core Web Vitals, you are leaving rankings on the table. Performance is a direct ranking factor, and a faster site also converts more of the traffic it already gets. A quick audit will show exactly what is holding your rankings back.

What does a technical SEO audit cover?

A complete crawl using professional tools to identify broken links, crawl errors, duplicate content, missing or duplicate meta tags, slow pages, schema issues, redirect chains, and any other technical factor suppressing your rankings. You receive a prioritised list of fixes with context on why each one matters.

What are Core Web Vitals and why do they matter?

Core Web Vitals are Google page experience signals — LCP measures how fast the main content loads, CLS measures how stable the layout is, and INP measures how responsive the page feels to interact with. Failing these benchmarks suppresses your rankings and frustrates visitors. Every site I build passes from day one.

How fast should my website actually be?

Google recommends Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) under 200ms. In practice, the sites I build consistently achieve LCP under 1 second. Every 100ms of load time improvement measurably increases conversion rates — speed is not just a technical metric, it directly affects revenue.

What are the most common causes of a slow website?

Unoptimised images are the most common culprit — a single uncompressed photo can add seconds of load time. After that: too many third-party scripts (chat widgets, analytics tags, social embeds), no image lazy loading, large CSS and JavaScript bundles, and hosting on an undersized or geographically distant server. A performance audit identifies exactly which issues apply to your site and how much each one costs you.

My site is built on WordPress — can you still improve its performance?

Yes. WordPress sites are frequently slow out of the box due to bloated themes, excessive plugins, and poor hosting. I can audit and optimise an existing WordPress site — removing unnecessary plugins, configuring caching, optimising images, deferring scripts, and improving hosting configuration. In some cases the improvement is dramatic without rebuilding anything.
