Cable Station Stanley

Cable Station Stanley operates one of those genuinely interesting agri-tourism experiences that Tasmania's North West does so well. The website needed to do justice to the place — and, more practically, to stop dragging the business down with years of accumulated technical debt.

The existing site had been built on a commercially purchased WordPress theme. That's a perfectly reasonable starting point in 2018, but five years on the result was a familiar story: features that had quietly stopped working as WordPress updated underneath, plugins layered on top of plugins to work around theme limitations, and a configuration that the original theme author would no longer have recognised. The site was slow, fragile, and increasingly insecure.

The rebuild kept what was working — content, structure, the core of what the site was trying to communicate — and threw out the rest. The new build uses a custom theme rather than an off-the-shelf one, so every line of code is there because the site needs it. The plugin footprint shrank substantially. Performance and security improved as side effects of doing things properly rather than working around someone else's framework.

The end result is a site Cable Station Stanley can be confident in for the next several years — built on solid foundations, properly maintained, and with no accumulated dead weight to clean up later.
